Joan Butts was the ABF Teaching Coordinator for a decade. Among other activities, she ran the Teacher Accreditation Program. (TAP)
When her stint ended, the ABF discontinued the role, which devolved to the State Associations and the ABTA.
The ABF has a list of teachers. There are 20-odd honorary teachers – those “who have a long and successful teaching history”,
plus a list of about 350! who undertook the Teacher Accreditation Program with Joan Butts in the past decade or so.
The ABF still maintains a link for resources at
There you will find links to local and overseas sites.
The New Zealand and English sites have a lot of help for teachers.
The NZBA site has good material download, though much is Acol-based. In Australia, BridgeNSW and BridgeVictoria have adapted much of the New Zealand Material.
The first site has the usual “What is Bridge” plus a video and links to material for beginners, improvers and intermediates.
Clicking the Materials link reveals a full beginner course with various files to download, including:
- pdfs of student and teacher notes, quizzes and hands.
(These are for teachers who don’t provide students with a textbook. In Australia, most teachers use a textbook by one of our local authors – Paul Marston, Derrick Browne, Joan Butts)
The NZBA starts with Mini-bridge in Lesson One. - Powerpoint slides for each lesson, which you can download and edit. These are great for teachers who use a computer linked to a TV screen or projector.
- A 20 minute YouTube video to go with each lesson, so students can revise at home.
- Deal files for the play hands
- lin files of the play hands for online lessons with BBO. (The teacher can set up a teaching table on BBO, with students as kibitzers.)
This has heaps of useful links, particularly the Classroom to Clubroom video.

The Word Bridge Federation (WBF) also has links to useful material.
The Bridge Academy has a Starter Pack for beginners with good interactive play deals from https://bridge-training.com/.
Under Teach Bridge, you can register for a Webinar.
